Your looking for a shotgun microphone. The furry thing is a windscreen. You can find both of those things at this web site: http://www.shure.com/sm89.html

The big furry mics you refer to are the Seinheisser 816 directional shotgun mic ( last look i think they come in at ?600 ukp)
or you can go for the slightly smaller Seinheisser 416 mini-shotgun ( i think that is about ?400 ukp )
The furry bit is called a wind sock and cuts down on low frequency drones caused by wind etc.
Both these mics require what is called "phantom power". This can be supplied either using a power box ( which connects in line and uses a square type battery which usually lasts a week)
Or best to use a SQN 4 channel stereo mixer which is worn over the shoulder by a sound man and he can send tone to get a level and put in noise reducers and get a generally good level which he can adjust on-the-spot without going near the camera at all. These use a long custom built rechargable battery which just about lasts forever!
On the mixer the soundman can plug in his closed cup headphones and monitor the actual sound being recorded. ( again the lead coming from the camera is really long so he can be well away from the cameraman and let him get on with it)

To go Pounds to Dollars, multiply by about 1.5
But knowing the way we in the UK are ripped off on a daily basis, I suspect that the dollar price is the same as the UK pound price. Ie. $600 and $400 if I remember the message above.

?600 is around $880 and ?400 is about $585.
But expect it to be cheaper in the US, everything else is.

The furry thing on the mic which is called a Windscreen usually runs $500.00 just for a real good proffesional windscreen and around $300-$3000 for a good - great mic.
